We want to thank our oldest living member Sister Tommie Lee Fisher for her record keeping and outstanding memory.
At the time this church was the First Missionary Baptist Church of Cypress Quarters.
Mt. Olive Church was originally erected under the shadow of the Turpentine Mills. Many of the members worked there and for the railroad company. Our church was organized the first Sunday of November in 1922 under an Arbor Bush on the Corner of N.E. 13th Avenue and Fourth Street, 100-foot south of this church’s current location under the Leadership documented as Reverend L.R. Wilson during the years of 1922-1926.
The original charter deacons under Rev. L.R. Wilson are listed below:
• Deacon Bill Thomas (Better known as Bill Taxi)
• Deacon G.H. Little
• Deacon W.A. Hall
Upon the ending of Reverend L.R. Wilson pastoral services in 1926. The succession of Pastor form 1926-19 until. The year 1957 is sketchy...in 1957 a new building was erected where we stand now 1057 N.E. 14th Avenue under the Leadership of Rev. J.L. Smith 1957 thru the 90s.
The original charter deacons under Rev. J.L. Smith listed below:
• Deacon W.B. Berry
• Deacon E.D. Benjamin
• Deacon Budy Lee Hester
• Deacon Grady Strickland
• Deacon Robert Cooley
• Deacon Alonzo Thomas
In 1957 upon moving into our edifice a fellowship hall and pastors’ study was attached to the rear of the new church.
The Late Deacon Leroy Alexander commissioned a young artist to paint a mural. That graces our sanctuary until today in the choir stand. This artis Robert Butler later became identified as a world famous “Highwayman.” The artist came back after Deacon Alexander passing in October of 2010 and at that time signed the mural. This mural depicted Jesus Christ invitation to the sinners of the world to be saved.
Mt. Olive grew and flourished during these past 107 years. During the years of 1960; Bethel Missionary Baptist Church was born from the division of membership at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. This was a trying time but the church had to endure. The Lord has now healed and fellowship restored.
During those trying time Mt. Olive was under the Late Rev. Wilson in the early 70 and from 1990 to 1994 under the leadership of the Late Rev. W.H. Moore 1990-1994 and then the barton was passed to Rev. E. Taylor 1994. And then the church called Bishop Maurice Alexander in June, 1997. Bishop Maurice Alexander had been our longest serving leader with the tenure of 26 years in 2023. In 2019 Mt. Olive launched an online church at Oasislivingwater.com. This prepared us for the future and COVID. Bishop Maurice Alexander sadly preached his last sermon on Father’s Day June 18, 2023; After the Message was given a letter of resignation was read, putting the church under care of our Assistant Pastor McKenzie.
Pastor McKenzie accepted the torch from Bishop Alexander on June 18, 2023 and he has been diligently working to finish what needs to be done to aid in the growth and repairs needed to keep Mt. Olive open through his teaching, preaching and Missionary Work… Rev. Ellis McKenzie was formerly installed on Sunday, January 21, 2024 as the Pastor of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church of Okeechobee where he and members has under took the task of remodeling the sanctuary.
