A small town that’s big on hospitality, Clewiston has much to offer visitors.
Like all the towns around Lake Okeechobee, the area is known for sport fishing, particularly largemouth bass.
“America’s Sweetest Town,” Clewiston is home to U.S. Sugar Corporation. Each March, the Clewiston Sugar Festival celebrates the sugar industry with a festival, fair, cooking contests, beauty contest and free open air concerts.
The City of Clewiston began in 1920, when John O'Brien of Philadelphia and Alonzo Clewis of Tampa purchased a large tract of land to establish a town. They commissioned a town plan and built the Moore Haven & Clewiston Railway to connect the community to the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad at Moore Haven. In 1925, Clewiston was incorporated as a city.
The Clewiston News, established in 1928, published weekly until September 2018 when it merged with the Okeechobee News, the Glades County Democrat and The Sun (in Belle Glade/Pahokee) to become the Lake Okeechobee News. The Lake Okeechobee News print edition is published every Wednesday. The online digital edition of the Clewiston News is updated daily.
