LABELLE — After a long hiatus, the Hendry County Bowl is back on this week.
The LaBelle Cowboys are set to host the Clewiston Tigers on Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m., in the first meeting between the teams since 2020.
The Cowboys own the most dramatic of those meetings. In the 2018 season opener at Clewiston, LaBelle fell behind 20-3 in the third quarter before mounting a comeback. Senior Maynard Blackmon scored to pull the Cowboys within 20-17 heading into the fourth quarter, then broke through the middle of the Tigers’ defense in the final minute for the go-ahead touchdown in a 24-20 win.
Clewiston answered emphatically the next two years. In 2019, the Tigers went into LaBelle and claimed the Hendry County Bowl with a 35-3 victory, helped by a pick-six from sophomore Jalen Cole. In 2020, Clewiston made it two straight with a 53-0 shutout at home. The Tigers led 45-0 at halftime and held LaBelle to just over 100 yards of total offense.
LaBelle (3-5) comes into Friday’s 7:30 p.m. kickoff having won two of its last three games since snapping a four-game losing streak. Clewiston (1-9) is coming off a loss in a high scoring game against Somerset Academy 42-32.
