FORT MYERS — Margaret Lowman has been named operations coordinator for Trailways Camps, an organization that offers life-enriching overnight camping experiences for adults with a broad range of special needs.
Lowman has spent more than two decades working with people with disabilities, as a floor supervisor at Sandy Park Development Center in North Fort Myers, and house manager at Adonis Group Home for those with autism. She has also worked as a Trailways Camp counselor, leading campers through the day’s activities.
Her experience makes her a good fit for this new position in the non-profit organization. She joins Jamie Senkeleski, the executive director, as a full-time Trailways Camp staff member.
“The number of Trailways Camp sessions is growing,” says Jerry Miller, the organization’s board chair. “Margaret’s presence leading the operations team will assure that the high quality of camping experiences Jamie’s leadership has developed will continue to be the highlight for campers and caregivers.”
In her new position, Lowman’s responsibilities include managing the selection of campers for each session, leading volunteer communications, counselor recruitment and ensuring the camp is ready to receive the campers, whose various special needs require specific health and safety protocols.
Each 4-day/3-night session at the Riverside Retreat Center in LaBelle welcomes 20 adult campers and more than 80 trained volunteers and staff so that every camper receives the individualized attention needed to thrive. The camps are funded by donations.
