OKEECHOBEE — In what is possibly their shortest meeting ever, the Okeechobee City Council met on June 16 for 22 minutes.
Mayor Dowling Watford proclaimed and called November 3, 2026, as the general city election day to elect three council members. Candidates must have lived within the city limits for at least one year and be a city-registered voter, pay the required fees, and file all required documents during city-qualifying week, beginning at noon on August 3, 2026, through, but not later than, August 7, 2026. The three candidates with the highest number of votes will take a seat on the council for four years.
The council voted to enter an agreement with FPL to install five 30-foot light fixtures on Northeast 13th Avenue and Northeast Third Street. City Administrator Gary Ritter said the lights will face downward. The monthly fee will be $116.99.
A quote from C.W. Roberts Contracting, Inc. to repave Northwest NW Fifth Avenue from NW Ninth Street to NW 11th Street, NW Third Avenue from NW Ninth Street to NW 13th Street, SE 13th Avenue from SR 70 to SE Eighth Street, SE Seventh Street from SE Ninth Avenue to SE 13th Avenue, SE 15th Street from SE Eighth Drive to SE Ninth Avenue and SE Sixth Avenue from SE Fouth Street to SE Seventh Street in an amount not to exceed $486,450.25 was accepted.
Ritter, who will soon be retiring, said he wanted to thank the incoming administrator, Denise Whitehead. She has been introducing herself to each staff member and spending time with each council member.
Ritter also spoke about the new windows on City Hall and said they are nearly finished with this job. They will be working on flooring and other things next. They expect to be finished by mid-July. After that, they will begin taking bids on the work on the old fire department.
Council members thanked Ritter for his five years serving as city administrator.
The public is welcome to attend any meeting of the council. They meet on the first and third Tuesdays of each month in their chambers on the second floor of City Hall.
