SARASOTA- With the clocks officially turning back an hour, we’ve now hit the time for ren faire season here in south Florida.
At a renaissance festival, most people dress in costumes, including not only the entertainers but the fairgoers themselves. The theming of each festival is meant to entertain by recreating a historical setting. But fantasy elements like dragons and wizards almost always play a part, so no need to fret over being historically accurate.
Most ren fairs feature musical and theatrical acts, art and handicrafts for sale, and festival food. Often the highlight of the day is the joust, where knights battle on the tournament field in front of cheering spectators. But seating goes quick, so make sure you arrive early to secure your spot if watching the joust is important for your crew.
Festivals often promote themed weekends during their run, with themes such as ‘Vikings’ where Viking themes events invade the festival or ‘heroes and villains’ where you’re encouraged to dress as one of your favorite characters.
The Sarasota Medieval Fair opens in November in Myakka City and runs every weekend throughout the month.
This year the fair’s central attraction is “The Battle of Halidon Hill,” a lighthearted reenactment of the 1333 clash between England and Scotland. The fair’s cast of costumed performers will stage the story as a human combat chess match, where knights, archers, kings, and foot soldiers take their places on a giant board to battle through strategy, humor, and pageantry.
“Over the past 13 weeks, I’ve watched our dedicated cast of local performers work tirelessly to bring the story of The Battle of Halidon Hill to life,” says Artistic Director Tara Connelly. “We are so excited to welcome every guest to the Woods of Mallaranny and share this unique experience.”
In addition to the featured battle, guests can enjoy live music, artisan markets, interactive games, delicious food, and the excitement of real jousting tournaments. With activities for all ages, the Sarasota Medieval Fair continues to blend historical spirit with modern-day fun for the whole family.
If you’d prefer to visit a ren fair on the east coast, the Florida Renaissance Fair is set for 2026 on every weekend from February through March in Deerfield Beach.
