Reflections from the Pulpit: True humility

Posted

But Jesus called them to Him and said, “...whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whosoever will be first among you, let him be your servant: just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Matthew 20:25-28

It’s our natural desire to want to be great, to be “someone”, to make a name for ourselves, to be successful, to be “known”, and man’s way of that kind of recognition is very different than the Lord’s.  We tend to do everything we can to exalt ourselves, after all, if we don’t do it, who will?

But Jesus, who being God, did everything He could to exalt His Father in heaven, not Himself!

There is something to be said about that “kind” of humility. It seems to go against logic. You should never have your motive to be, “If only I humble myself so that I can be exalted.”  Your humility should come by serving God and others.  The moment you decide to humble yourself for recognition, you’ve already destroyed any kind of true humility in you!

“Humble yourselves” is a request to be a servant to others! The glory is for the Lord! The only question you should be asking yourself is, “Lord, if I do this, will I get the glory or You?” If the answer is anything but for God’s glory, then examine yourself and see where pride has settled in and do everything to put to death that pride.

Jesus, humility, God
