Photographer discovers hidden jewel in Ormand Beach

Posted

FLORIDA — The Ormand Memorial Art Museum & Gardens is a little-known attraction, just a short drive from Lake Okeechobee.

Okeechobee photographer April Martin and her husband Victor recently discovered this hidden gem about 2 ½ hours north of Lake Okeechobee at 78 E. Granada Blvd. in Ormand Beach.

April enjoys finding new, interesting places to enjoy and loves nothing more than to take pictures of local animals and scenery.  Victor enjoys exploring as well, but even more than that, he likes to see the sparkle in April’s eyes as she explores a new place.

She said one of her favorite things about the Ormand Beach Memorial Art Museum & Gardens is the waterfall. “You don’t get to see a lot of waterfalls living in Florida,” she said. “This one is beautiful.” Though she enjoyed the waterfall, she truly loved walking among the turtles. “There were more than we could count,” she said. “It was amazing.” She explained she was so captivated, she completely forgot to take photos!

This attraction was created in 1946 to honor veterans, and according to their website, has “a mission to inspire the community through art and nature while honoring those who fought for freedom.”

Each year, the museum holds several exhibitions featuring national and international artists, and throughout the year highlights art produced by students in the area.

The museum was renovated in 2021 and reopened in May 2022. It now offers a larger classroom and more space for offices and exhibitions.

The attraction is home to lush gardens which the website recognizes as home to a small turtle sanctuary, butterfly observation zones, a charming gazebo and more.

The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on Sunday from noon until 4 p.m. The garden is open from sunrise until sunset every day. This year, the museum will begin charging an $8 admission fee for adults, $5 for seniors, college students and military with ID and $3 for youth age 6-17.
