LABELLE- An online petition to keep the Firehouse Community Theatre in the city-owned historic firehouse has reached over 400 signatures.

As the theatre’s 20-year lease approaches expiration in October 2027, the volunteer run nonprofit is fighting to secure its future.

“As we look forward to our 34th season, our goal is to show our city leaders just how much the Firehouse means to the people of Hendry County,” reads the text of the petition. “Every signature on this petition is a vote of confidence in the volunteers, sponsors, actors and audiences who have poured their hearts into this historic space for over three decades.”

As the city of LaBelle considers whether to renew the theatre’s lease of the historic firehouse building, petition organizers are asking supporters to come to the July 9 LaBelle City Hall meeting at 5:30 p.m. in a show of solidarity.

The Firehouse Community Theatre, which is entering its 34th season, offers plays, youth programs and community events, and is seen as a vital gathering place for the arts in Hendry County.

The petition has already drawn comments from supporters voicing their affection for the theatre.

“The Firehouse Community Theatre welcomed me with open arms when I moved to Labelle several years ago,” read a comment from Breeza from Fort Denaud. “I have made lifelong bonds with my theatre family and everyone who volunteers at Firehouse does it purely out of love for the arts. I can't imagine this town without the Firehouse Community Theatre.”

The nonprofit organization has invested significantly in the city-owned property over the years, covering repairs and improvements at its own expense.

“We are more than a theatre,” concluded the petition, “we are a family. And we want to ensure that the Firehouse remains a dedicated home for local community arts for generations to come.”
