OKEECHOBEE — A painting by “Doc Anna” Darrow has come home to Okeechobee.

On Sept. 16, Lynne Scharfschwerdt Glass donated a painting by “Doc Anna” to the Okeechobee Historical Society. The presentation came during a meeting of the Hospice Ladies of Giving in the Historic Okeechobee Bank Building.

Glass said her grandparents were friends with Doc Anna, and some of her relatives have her paintings.

“Art is to be shared,” she explained.

Dr. Anna Darrow was a pioneering female physician on the Florida frontier. In 1909, she became only the second woman doctor licensed in the state. Sometimes called the Petticoat Doctor of the Everglades, she often traveled alone, braving swampland, alligators, venomous snakes, and dangerous outlaw gangs to heal the sick, nurse the wounded and deliver babies.

Dr. Anna and her husband Dr. Roy Darrow served the Okeechobee community from 1912 to 1922.
