OKEECHOBEE – A 65-year-old Okeechobee woman died in traffic accident on State Road 78 in Okeechobee County on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, the accident was reported at 12:42 p.m. in Okeechobee County, just east of the Glades County line.

A 2000 Volvo VNL truck-tractor and 2002 Transcraft flatbed semi-trailer (designated as V-1 in the report), driven by a 27-year-old Okeechobee man was traveling east on SR 78, approaching a vehicle ahead of it that was waiting to turn left into the Big O RV Park, according to the FHP report.

“In an apparent attempt to avoid colliding with the stopped vehicle, V-1 brakes locked as it traveled across the center line and entered the westbound lane and westbound grass shoulder,” the report explains.

At the same time, a 2025 Ford F-150 pickup truck (V-2), driven by a 65-year-old Okeechobee woman was traveling west and entered the westbound grass shoulder in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid a collision.

“The right front of V-1 collided with the left front of V-2 on the westbound grass shoulder. V-1 came to final rest in contact with V-2, partially on the westbound grass shoulder, blocking the westbound and eastbound lanes. V-2 came to final rest entirely on the westbound grass shoulder,” the report states.

The driver of the Ford F-150 was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 1:57 p.m.

The accident investigation is ongoing.
