OKEECHOBEE — Sunday, Feb. 15, was National School Resource Officer Day. Okeechobee County is proud of the men and women who serve in that role each and every day.
School Resource Officers are far more than a uniform in a hallway. They are mentors, counselors, coaches, listeners, protectors, and at times, the steady presence a student did not know they needed. They build relationships long before there is ever a crisis. They attend ball games, school events, award ceremonies, and parent nights. They learn names. They know families. They invest in kids.
While their primary responsibility is safety and security, what truly sets our SROs apart is their heart. They understand that our most trusted resource is not a building or a program, it is our children. They stand ready, without hesitation, to make sacrifices to ensure every student and staff member returns home safely at the end of the day.
Serving as a School Resource Officer is not an easy assignment. It requires patience, professionalism, emotional intelligence, and a deep sense of duty. These deputies walk into our schools every morning knowing that they carry both the weight of protection and the opportunity to positively shape young lives.
