WASHINGTON, D.C. — Okeechobee freshman Miria Mendez was recognized by Florida Congressman Scott Franklin for her artwork earning third place in Florida’s congressional art competition.
A total of 67 students submitted artwork for the competition which is sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives. This year’s theme was “Happy 250th Birthday, America”, which inspired a wide range of thoughtful and creative pieces on the nation’s history.
“FL-18 is home to some incredibly talented students, which was reflected in the submissions we received,” said Congressman Franklin. “Each piece demonstrated both creativity and a real investment of time, discipline, and perspective. It’s encouraging to see how thoughtfully these students approached the theme and brought their own experiences to the canvas. I appreciate the teachers and families who continue to support and challenge them and look forward to seeing where their talents take them next.”
Miria Mendez is a ninth grader at the Okeechobee Freshman Campus. Her art, titled “The American Way”, features a cowboy riding a horse with an American flag imposed on the background. The shading is particularly skillful on the horse’s flank and the eagle’s feathers, using light and shadow to create a three-dimensional effect. The overall mood is one of strength, heritage, and national pride.
