OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee High School Brahman varsity soccer team  headed into Christmas break with an impressive 12-1-1 record.

This season the Brahmans have swept DeSoto County, Clewiston, Tradition Prep, Legacy, and Lake Placid. During their most recent game against Lake Placid Okeechobee shut out the Dragons 8-0.

Senior Alexander Gomez led the team with two goals and one assist in that win, while senior Alejandro Lopez and freshman Izaak Torres each had 5 and 3 saves respectively.

Gomez has notched 14 assists so far this season, which is the second highest in the state. Senior Rodolfo Gomez leads the Brahmans with 13 goals, which makes him the second highest scorer in Okeechobee’s district. Alejandro Lopez’s 45 saves as goalkeeper is enough for him to rank second in the district.

The Brahmans are 3-1 in district games so far. Okeechobee hit the road for back-to-back district games against the Legacy Lions and Sebastian River Sharks on Nov. 10 and 13. The Brahmans defeated the Lions 3-1 and shutout the Sharks 4-0. They then lost a close district game 3-0 to Jensen Beach on Nov. 20 but bounced back with another district win over Legacy 4-1 on Dec. 4.

This time last year as the Brahmans headed into Christmas break Okeechobee’s record was only 4-5-1. Their 12-1-1 record this season is not only an improvement, but a sign the team may be ready for a playoff run. Last season Okeechobee advanced to the district semifinals before falling to the South Fork Bulldogs in a close 2-1 game. Jensen Beach would go on to defeat South Fork to claim the district title.

After the break the Brahmans will be back on the field to host the St. Edward’s Pirates at Okeechobee High School on Jan. 7 at 6 p.m.
