October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Posted

OKEECHOBEE – During their Oct. 8 meeting, Okeechobee County Commissioners proclaimed October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Okeechobee County.

The proclamation states: “Domestic violence affects individuals and families in communities throughout Florida, including Okeechobee County, and can have lasting effects on their safety, health, and well-being.

“Every person deserves to live free from violence, fear, and coercion, and survivors deserve to be heard, respected, and supported.

“Raising awareness helps our community recognize abuse, respond with compassion, and connect those affected with confidential support and services.

“Advocates, service providers, law enforcement officers, health care professionals, and community members play vital roles in assisting survivors and promoting safety.

“October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to honor survivors, remember lives lost to domestic violence, and renew our commitment to preventing abuse.”

Edna Malagon accepted the proclamation on behalf of Martha’s House. Martha’s House is a full-service domestic violence shelter for survivors and their children. They operate a 24-bed emergency shelter and a 24-hour hotline, provide outreach services, violence prevention education, court hearing accompaniment, injunction assistance and victims’ compensation.
