OKEECHOBEE — Firefighters were busy in December with fires, motor vehicle accidents and more.
On Dec. 4, Okeechobee County Fire Rescue was dispatched to the 1100 block of U.S. 441 North regarding a vehicle fire at approximately 3:30 p.m. when the firefighters arrived, they found a tractor with a bat wing on fire. Most of the fire was located below the cab and on the ground around the mower. The crew was able to extinguish the fire quickly. The man who had been operating the tractor said he was mowing when he noticed fire below the cab. He tried to put the fire out on his own but was unsuccessful.
Another vehicle fire was the reason for a call on Dec. 10 at approximately 7 a.m. in the 2700 block of U.S. 441 South. When firefighters arrived, they found a single-vehicle pickup truck approximately 80% involved in fire. The owner told them the fire started after the engine backfired.
On Dec. 15, OCFR was dispatched to the 3500 block of Northwest 25th Avenue at approximately 8 p.m. The fire was determined to have started from heat from another object, and it caused approximately $15,000 in damage to a detached garage.
In addition to the fires, the crews responded to emergency medical calls, motor vehicle accidents, power lines down and more. In their spare time, the fire trucks escorted Santa around the county neighborhoods so children and adults alike could wave at him from their own front yards.
