Indiantown — On Thursday, Jan. 28, the Village of Indiantown council approved a resolution to take all steps necessary to rename Magnolia Street as E. Thelma Waters Street. The Florida Commission on the Status of Women determined that E. Thelma Waters exemplifies women’s contributions to Florida through her life and work. Congruently, the Hon. Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida, chose to recognize Ms. Waters by selecting her as one of three inductees to the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame for 2020. Ms. Waters will be immortalized on an honorary wall in the halls of the Florida Capitol. Her induction ceremony was held on January 28, 2021.

“We find it appropriate to celebrate her accomplishments by renaming Magnolia Street as E. Thelma Waters Street on the same day that she is being honored at the state capitol,” said Village of Indiantown Mayor Janet Hernàndez.

E. Thelma Waters has been an Indiantown resident since 1941 and was a signatory of Indiantown’s 2017 Articles of Incorporation. She is a tireless advocate for women, children, migrant laborers, and her hometown of Indiantown. Ms. Waters has a decades-long record of care and advocation for others in the Indiantown community.

The Public Works Department will replace the street signs along the corridor in the upcoming weeks. Magnolia Street runs east-west from Southwest 168th Avenue to Southwest 173 Avenue.
