OKEECHOBEE — Gabriel Gonzalez, a junior at Okeechobee High School, was honored at the March 12 meeting of the Okeechobee County Commission for his outstanding achievements.

Gabriel Gonzalez has been a part of the Okeechobee County Public Safety Leadership Cadets since the program started in October 2023. As a Lieutenant, he has helped lead the unit for over a year, setting the standard through his example, mentoring younger cadets, and stepping up whenever needed, the proclamation explains.

He played a key role in preparing and motivating the team for the Florida Sheriff’s Explorer State Conference, helping build the culture and success the program enjoys today.

In addition, he is also a dedicated cadet in the Okeechobee High School Fire CTE Academy, where he continues to build the technical skills, discipline, and professionalism that distinguish him. He believes strongly in teamwork and collaboration, and he demonstrates genuine respect and admiration for local elected officials and community leaders.

Most recently, Gonzalez was selected as a Glades Electric contest winner to attend the 2026 Youth Tour and will represent Glades Electric as a Youth Tour delegate. In June, he will travel on an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. where he will tour our nation's capital, meet with legislators, and learn about electric cooperatives and grassroots advocacy with other high school juniors from across Florida and the nation.

“Leadership in our young people is a key component in making sure our community continues to grow,” said Commissioner Terry Burroughs.

Gonzalez thanked Glades Electric for the opportunity, his senior advisor at the Okeechobee Education Foundation.

“All the experiences have really opened my eyes to what the real work is,” he said “I am excited for everything and thank you for the opportunity.’
