MOORE HAVEN — In a remarkable achievement that is drawing attention across Florida, the Glades County School District has earned an "A" rating from the Florida Department of Education for the second consecutive year, becoming the first school district in the history of the Heartland Educational Consortium to achieve back-to-back "A" designations.
For many districts, an "A" rating is a significant accomplishment. For Glades County—a small rural district serving a close-knit agricultural community—it represents something even greater: proof that visionary leadership, high expectations, and an unwavering commitment to students can overcome the challenges of limited resources and geographic isolation.
Just a few years ago, Glades County Schools faced a very different reality. In 2020, the district was identified as a struggling school system. Today, it stands among Florida's highest-performing districts, completing one of the state's most impressive educational turnarounds.
"Great schools are built on great people who believe in children," said Dr. Alice Beth Barfield, Superintendent of Glades County School District. "Our success is the result of teachers, administrators, support staff, families, school board members, and community partners working together around a shared commitment to excellence. We refused to let our size or circumstances define our future."
Under Dr. Barfield's leadership, the district implemented strategic reforms, strengthened instructional practices, expanded opportunities for students, and established a culture where high expectations became the norm. The results have been extraordinary.
What makes this achievement particularly notable is that it has been accomplished with resources that are significantly less than those available to many larger districts. While some school systems benefit from substantially larger budgets, Glades County Schools has demonstrated that success is not determined by funding alone—it is driven by leadership, vision, and a steadfast focus on student outcomes.
