Florida gas prices lower than last year, but global uncertainty looms

Posted

TAMPA – Florida drivers are paying less for gasoline than they did a year ago, but uncertainty in global markets could change that. Sunday's state average of $2.83 per gallon was:

  • 8 cents more than a week ago
  • 15 cents less than a month ago
  • 29 cents less than a year ago

While recent developments in Venezuela have drawn attention, oil prices remain relatively stable. Friday’s closing price for U.S. crude oil was $57.32 per barrel, up just 58 cents from the previous week. Although Venezuela was once a significant producer of crude oil, its exports have been limited for years due to sanctions. Analysts say global supply remains sufficient, though any major disruption could put upward pressure on prices.

“Florida gas prices are lower than a year ago because oil supplies have been steady and demand has softened compared to previous years,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “While global events can influence prices, there’s no indication yet that recent developments will have a significant effect.”

A Look Back at 2025

Florida’s daily average price for gasoline in 2025 was $3.04 per gallon, about 25 cents less than in 2024. Prices were lower last year largely because global oil production increased and demand growth slowed after the post-pandemic surge in 2024. The highest daily average in 2025 was $3.23, compared to $3.64 in 2024. The lowest point in 2025 was $2.74, while 2024’s low was $2.99.

Ways to Save on Gasoline

  1. Combine errands to limit driving time.
  2. Drive conservatively. Avoid aggressive acceleration and speeding, which reduces fuel economy.
  3. Remove excess weight in your vehicle. Every 100 pounds taken out of the vehicle improves fuel economy by 1-2 percent.
  4. Shop around for the best gas prices in your community by using the AAA mobile app.
  5. Pay with cash. Some retailers charge more per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
