OKEECHOBEE — At their July 23 meeting, Okeechobee County Commissioners unanimously voted to set the county’s tentative property tax rate at 7.5 mills. This is a reduction from the 2025/2026 millage rate of 7.8 mills.
One mill equals $1 in taxes for every $1,000 of taxable property value.
This rate will be advertised in the Truth In Millage (TRIM) notices, which will be mailed to property owners. After the TRIM notices go out, the commission can lower the tax rate for the coming fiscal year, but can not raise it.
While the proposed tax rate is lower than 2025/2026 millage rate of 7.8 mills, some property owners may see an increase in their tax bill if their assessed property values increased.
Commissioners set the Law Enforcement Municipal Services Taxing Unit (MSTU) at zero. While the MSTU has been on the books for years as an available source of tax revenue, the commissioners have never used it.
