County commission approves list of streets to be repaved

Posted

OKEECHOBEE – Nine miles of roadway in Okeechobee are scheduled for resurfacing in 2026 according to a plan approved at the Dec. 18 meeting of the Okeechobee County Board of Commissioners.

Public Works Director Darren Brown said $1.5 million is budgeted for the road work in the 2025/2026 fiscal year.

The repaving list includes:

  • SW 8th St from SW 24th Avenue going west to end (do radius onto SW 30th Terrace --75ft);
  • SE 8th Street from SE 60th Avenue to SE 80th Avenue ( go around radius on west end and tie-in to new asphalt on east end);
  • NE 23rd Way from NE 304th Street going north to end;
  • NE 24th Avenue from SR 70 going north to end;
  • SE 59th Boulevard from SR 710 to RxR right-of-way;
  • SE 66th Avenue overlay circular cul-de-sac area and tie-in to SE 66th Ave (approximately 150 ft.);
  • NW 38th Avenue from Hwy 68 going north to end;
  • NE 96th Avenue from SR 70 going south to NE 7th Street;
  • NW 16th Street from US 441 going west to NW 5th Avenue;
  • NE 101st Street from NE 128th Avenue going west to end;
  • NE 120th Street several locations between NE 128th Ave and NE 56th Avenue.
  • SW 24th Avenue from Hwy 70 to SW 28th Street (This location will be used to expend remaining funds and may be adjusted as needed to meet budget limitations.)

    Brown said the Road and Bridge Division selected roadways based on the following criteria: Pavement condition inventory (PCI) conducted by Culpepper & Terpening in 2018; actual field evaluations by staff; traffic volumes; and, amount of maintenance performed on roadway.

    Brown explained the PCI is a pavement condition survey for each roadway on a segment-by-segment basis for every paved mile of county roadways in Okeechobee. It analyzes the existing pavement condition based on distress type, level of distress, quantity of distress and then rates each road with a numerical value which correlates from excellent to failed roadways.

    The roads listed for resurfacing in the 2025/2026 FY have been inspected and show various types of pavement failure such as: Oxidation, cracking, loss of aggregate, pot holes and edge of pavement failure.
