Commissioner asks FDOT to extend public comments on Clewiston project

CLEWISTON - Hendry County Commissioner Ramon Iglesias is asking the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for an extension of the comment period on their upcoming project on US 27 in Clewiston.

Commissioner Iglesias sent a letter to FDOT on Dec. 4 following their presentation of the project on Dec. 3. The project involves roadway improvements to US 27 from Industrial Canal to W Sagamore Avenue in Clewiston. The proposed improvements include milling and resurfacing the pavement, introduction of curbed medians and traffic separators, and expansion of the drainage system to alleviate corridor ponding, along with upgrades to signing and pavement markings.

Commissioner Iglesias says that while he appreciated the presentation, he was disappointed that more businesses and residents along Highway 27 weren’t in attendance for the presentation, since the changes to the road could have a significant financial impact on many along the project corridor.

“While I appreciate that FDOT is accepting public comments until Dec. 17,” said Commissioner Iglesias, “the combination of limited participation at the meeting and the scope of the proposed changes leads me to believe that our community needs additional time to fully understand what is being proposed and how it may affect them.”

“For these reasons,” the commissioner continued, “I am formally requesting that FDOT postpone the Dec. 17 comment period and schedule additional in-person public meetings after the first of the year here in Clewiston, to provide residents and business owners additional opportunities to hear the presentation, ask questions, and offer feedback.”

Commissioner Iglesias said after sending the letter, he spoke personally to FDOT District One Secretary Jamie Driggers. Secretary Driggers confirmed that FDOT will not move forward with the project until another public meeting is held.

Because of statutory notice requirements, this additional meeting will take place either toward the end of January or the first week of February.
