OKEECHOBEE — The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office and Okeechobee County Building and Zoning urge residents to use caution when approached by unsolicited paving, asphalt, driveway, or construction contractors operating within the county.
County officials have received periodic complaints involving traveling or unlicensed contractors who offer paving or repair work, accept payment, and then either fail to complete the job or perform substandard work that later requires costly repairs.
Please remember:
• All contractors performing work in Okeechobee County are required to have a valid county occupational license and, when applicable, proper permits.
• Never exchange money or sign a contract until licensing and permits have been verified.
• Residents are strongly encouraged to contact the Okeechobee County Building and Zoning Department to confirm permits before any work begins.
For permit and licensing verification, contact: Beth Albert at the Okeechobee County Building and Zoning Department, 863-763-3372.
Common red flags may include contractors who:
• Appear unannounced or go door-to-door offering “leftover” materials,
• Request immediate cash payment,
• Operate dump trucks pulling a paver or skid steer,
• Use vehicles or equipment with out-of-state license plates,
• Cannot provide local licensing, insurance, or written contracts.
If you suspect someone is operating without proper licensing or permits, please contact the Okeechobee County Building and Zoning Department and notify the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office so the matter can be addressed appropriately and legally.
Taking a few minutes to verify credentials can prevent financial loss and protect both homeowners and the community.
