OKEECHOBEE- The 1990-91 Okeechobee High School basketball team was recognized at OHS before Okeechobee’s game against Sebastian River on Jan. 26. The team is nearing the 35th anniversary of their remarkable 27-3 season.

Former players gathered at midcourt before the game and held a banner celebrating their 27-3 record and appearance in the regional final.

The 90-91 team was one of the best squads the Brahmans have ever produced, and their 27-3 record is still the best in school history. Coached by Doug Greseth, the team averaged 70.2 points per game while holding their opponents to an average of 56.5. The top five scorers were Robin Cope with 648 points, Demetre Riles with 468 points, Raymond Collins with 314 points, Antwann Fludd with 271 points, and Troy Harper with 222 points.

The Brahmans rose to fourth in the state that season, advancing all the way to the regional final. They beat Port St. Lucie in the first round of the district tournament to face South Fork for the District 10 title.

South Fork was one of the few teams to beat Okeechobee in the regular season that year, with the Bulldogs taking a 63-58 win over the Brahmans near the end of the season. But, in the district championship, the Brahmans avenged that loss. Okeechobee secured a dramatic 81-80 win to claim a district title and advance to the regional tournament.

Coach Greseth had a record of 163-122 and finished his high school coaching career with a record of 533 wins and 346 losses. His assistants that season were John Carroll and Tony Delegall.

Only one other Brahman team managed to get close to the 1990-91 team’s record. Okeechobee’s 2019-2020 team went on a remarkable run that saw them also advance to the regional final. The team finished the season with a 26-3 record. They were coached by a former member of that 1990-91 team, Demetre Riles.

The gym that the team achieved that record in is now set for demolition to make way for the new Okeechobee High School. The reunion this year was not only to recognize the team for their accomplishments but give the players one last look at the gym before it’s replaced with the new school.
