PALM BEACH COUNTY — In order to maintain compliance with Federal and State regulatory requirements that protect the public water distribution system and wastewater collection system, Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department (PBCWUD) announces two programs beginning on Oct. 1, 2021, that will take place in the areas of South Bay, Belle Glade, Pahokee, and Canal Point.
The Cross-Connection Control Program requires that a backflow preventer be present at properties with a water service except at single-family residential properties. A backflow preventer is a plumbing fixture designed to prevent contaminated water from entering the water distribution system. A licensed plumber must install the backflow preventer.
The Pretreatment Program requires that an oil/grease interceptor (OGI) be present at non-residential facilities preparing food, and at facilities that discharge oily products into the public sewer system. An OGI, also known as a grease trap, is a plumbing fixture. It is designed to reduce the amount of oil and grease that can enter and clog underground sewer lines. A properly maintained grease trap prevents the facility from experiencing sewer backups. A licensed plumber must install the OGI.
