SOUTH BAY -- A 72-year-old man was struck by two vehicles and killed on U.S. 27 in South Bay on Sept. 16, 2021 at 4:49 p.m. according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) report.
The information on the crash was withheld until next of kin could be notified.
PBSO has identified the pedestrian as Desmond Ricketts, 72, address unknown.
According to the PBSO report, Osmany Chinea, 31, of Hollywood, FL, was driving a 2018 Kenworth tractor trailer northbound on U.S. 27 within the outside lane of travel and Christopher King, 35, of Hollywood, FL, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Cruz, northbound on U.S. 27 in the inside lane of travel, when the accident occured.
The pedestrian was in the outside lane of travel, according to the PBSO report. His actions have not been confirmed, the report explains, but he may have been picking up a turtle off the highway. As the Kenworth neared the pedestrian, the front left corner of the truck struck him. The force of this blow pushed the pedestrian into the inside lane of travel, in front of the Chevrolet Cruz, and he was struck by the second vehicle.
Ricketts was pronounced dead at the scene.
