PBC residents invited to vote on community policing plans

Posted

PALM BEACH COUNTY — As part of the commitment to “changing the odds” for children and families, the Palm Beach County Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) collaborated with Community Partners of South Florida, Everyday Democracy, and Safety + Justice Challenge to create a plan of action through the Palm Beach County Community & Policing Dialogue Action Forum. Residents are invited to vote on proposed policing plans at the forum on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon via Zoom.

Community policing forums were held from July 2020 to April 2021 to open the door for meaningful conversations between community members, local leaders, police and other criminal justice officials. The upcoming forum will provide an opportunity for residents along with local officials, dialogue participants, and members of the criminal justice system to listen to proposals and vote on specific action plans they think will be best.

There are nine presenting communities: West Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Boca Raton; Boynton Beach; Northern Palm Beach County; Delray Beach; The Glades; Florida Atlantic University, Palm Beach State College, School District of Palm Beach County; Lake Worth Beach; Riviera Beach and West Palm Beach; Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Loxahatchee and The Acreage. Forum participants will choose the community they identify with and vote for the plan they believe will have the most positive impact on their community.

The previous sessions and upcoming forum are extensions of CJC activities that identify the drivers of over-incarceration in local jails and engage a diverse set of community stakeholders to determine ways to safely reduce jail populations.

“Bringing residents together with law enforcement officials, state attorneys, public defenders and others associated with the criminal justice system from each community, gives residents a voice and a role in taking action for what will work best for their individual neighborhoods. We are looking forward to implementing inclusive plans of action that will create positive change,” said CJC Executive Director Regenia Herring.
