Hendry County BOCC hears totals from the Hendry County School Zone Safety Program

Posted

LABELLE — Lt. Kristy Archer Hendry County Sheriff’s Office presented the totals for the Hendry County School Zone Safety Program for the 2025-2026 school year at the regular meeting of the Hendry County Board of Commissioners on Monday, Sept. 28.

The Hendry County School Zone Safety Program is an automated speed enforcement program launched by the Hendry County Sheriff's Office in partnership with Altumint, a traffic technology company, to help protect students and reduce speeding in marked school zones.

The program is enforced by placing signage with flashing lights as well as automated cameras with AI-enabled speed detection in school zones. The cameras capture the license plates of vehicles going 11mph or more over the posted school zone speed limit and the information is then sent to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office to review before a citation is issued.

The equipment installation, operation, and maintenance of the cameras and signs used are funded entirely by the collected citations issued to those who violate the posted speed limits, instead of taxpayers.

Archer’s report showed that there was a total of 13,741 notices of violation issued in Hendry County and that 7661 citations were paid.

The county school district received $91,435.37.

The school crossing guard received $37,985.59.

The state of Florida received $174,733.66.

Net disbursement to Hendry County was $60,552.08.

Commissioner Mitchell Wills asked Archer if there was a breakdown of violations by school zone across the county so that the board would know which areas need the more enforcement. Archer did not have the information on hand but agreed to have a representative from the company Altumint to come and answer any questions the board may have.
