Two die in late night chase

According to the Florida Highway Patrol two people died in a crash while trying to escape authorities Tuesday night, April 18, 2017 in Immokalee. FHP says a Volvo driven by Damian Rivera was traveling north on New Market Road toward the intersection of SR-29 at a high rate of speed while being followed by a Collier County Sheriff’s Office patrol car. The deputy was attempting to make a traffic stop and had its emergency equipment activated. Rivera lost control on a curve, causing the front left of the Volvo to collide into a tree. The rear of the Volvo rotated counterclockwise causing the right side of the vehicle to collide with a concrete power pole. The driver, 21-year-old Damian Rivera, and his passenger, 24-year-old Amy Manzano, were both pronounced dead at the scene by Collier County EMS personnel. FHP says the pair were not wearing seat belts. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
