The Third Annual Sunflower Festival was held at the Pepper Ranch on the north shore of Lake Trafford, on Saturday Oct.1. Between 400 and 450 visitors attended and enjoyed the wildlife tour, the sixteen educational booths, the outstanding Hay Rides and the wonderful wildlife. To every ones disappointment, the Sunflowers have not bloomed yet. This, according to the Scientist on scene, is due to the amount of wet weather we have been having. The Sunflower Festival is a Collier County Parks and Recreation project that is supported by the following County Departments. The Collier County Museum; the Collier County Solid Waste Dept.; the Collier County Pollution Control Dept.; The Collier Area Transit Dept. Other organizations supporting this event were; The Immokalee Fire Control District; Conservation Collier; the Crew Land Trust; the Florida Forest Service; the Cypress Cove Conservancy; the Fort Myers Archers; the 4H; IFAS-UF and SWFL. CISMA. The visitors, in addition could do a walking guided tour of the 2,500 acres of the Pepper Ranch. Without a doubt the outstanding Hay Rides were the greatest for the visitors. Annie Alverez, the head of the Dept. of Parks and Recreation, while disappointed with the non-flowering Sunflowers, felt that the program was a tremendous success and well received by the visitors.
