“See It?, Say It! Don’t Spread It, Report It” That’s the message from Collier County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kamela Patton. Collier County Public Schools and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office have released their new safety campaign in the wake of the social media fallout after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. In today’s society, social media has become a mechanism for which to share information quickly. After Hurricane Irma, social media proved to be a powerful tool for which to find information about shelter operations, food and water supplies, and where to apply for disaster assistance. However, law enforcement agencies across the country have seen an increase in social media posts with images depicting violence toward schools and students. Although it’s understandable that everyone is concerned and feels the need to be helpful by sharing what they see online, law enforcement agencies and school districts are now are pleading with the community not to share and repost suspicious social media posts and images related to threats online. On Tuesday, February 20, Collier County Public Schools released a statement saying “Keeping Collier County Public Schools safe is everyone’s business. False information on social media or online rumors can cause further fear or concern. DON’T SPREAD IT, REPORT IT!” Local officials are asking everyone to remain vigilant in identifying any potential school safety threat. If you see something, say something. But more importantly, report what you see and hear to the proper authorities and not on social media. It’s also recommended that parents monitor what students are taking to school as well as their social media accounts including Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
