A 46-year-old man is awaiting extradition to Collier County following his arrest in Illinois on a CCSO warrant charging him with threatening a woman he met on social media and trying to run her off Immokalee Road after she told him she didn’t want to see him anymore.

During their investigation, Collier County Sheriff’s Office detectives also discovered that the suspect, Chance Cinjin Michaels of Sioux City, Iowa, is a convicted sex offender with prior kidnapping charges, several warrants and is a subject of at least five protection orders throughout the country.

The CCSO warrant stems from a Jan. 29 incident in North Naples. The victim told detectives she found Michaels standing outside her apartment building while she waited for a friend to pick her up. When the friend arrived, Michaels confronted the victim about their relationship and an argument ensued. The victim attempted to drive away. Michaels followed her in his vehicle on Immokalee Road. He intentionally rammed her vehicle in an attempt to run her off the road and drove away.

The victim told detectives she had gone out on a date with Michaels, whom she met on social media, several days earlier. During the date, a friend contacted her and said she researched Michaels and found out he had a criminal history. The victim told Michaels she didn’t want to see him anymore. He got angry and abandoned her. She called a friend to pick her up.

She told detectives that Michaels has been sending her threats via social media and texts and that she was in fear of him. Further investigation by detectives found Michaels had sent the victim more than 100 text messages in which he threated to harm her.

On Feb. 11, detectives learned Michaels left Florida and traveled to the victim’s parents’ house in Illinois. Contact was made with the Plainfield (Illinois) Police Department which assisted in investigating the case and subsequently arrested Michaels on unrelated charges.

On Thursday, a CCSO arrest warrant was issued charging Michaels with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and written threats to do harm in connection with the Jan. 29 incident in North Naples. The warrant was forwarded to the jail facility in Joliet, Ill., where it was served on Michaels.
