LaBelle man linked to Collier County murder

Posted

Detectives have arrested a second suspect in connection with the January 2015 shooting that left one teenager dead and another injured in Golden Gate Estates.

Robert Kevin Cheney Jr., 22, of LaBelle, faces charges of third-degree murder and attempted third-degree murder in connection with the Jan. 21, 2015, shootings of Marcos Aleman, 17, and Michael Stallone, 18, both of Golden Gate Estates.

Meliton Cruz, 17, of Immokalee, was already in the Collier County jail on charges of second-degree murder with a firearm and attempted second-degree murder.

Detectives say Cruz shot the victims as they were sitting in their vehicle around 10 p.m. January 21, 2015, in the 2300 block of 50th Avenue Northeast, Golden Gate Estates. Aleman died at the scene. Stallone was able to exit the vehicle and obtain help from nearby residents. Stallone provided Collier deputies with Cruz’s name and a vehicle description and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

A short time after the shooting deputies saw a vehicle matching the description of the one from the shooting and conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Camp Keais Road and Immokalee Road in CCSO’s Immokalee District. Cruz was one of three occupants in the vehicle. Through the investigation deputies identified him as the person responsible for the shooting.

During their investigation detectives obtained additional information and physical evidence linking Cheney to the crime.

This past Monday the CCSO Homicide Section obtained a warrant for Cheney’s arrest. That same day Cheney was arrested on the Collier County warrant when he showed up to the state probation office in LaBelle.

He was booked into the Hendry County Jail. His bond was set at $760,000.
