There is a special commemoration happening in Immokalee this year. Ten years ago in January, Immokalee Technical College opened its doors to provide local access to state of the art career and technical education (CTE) for the folks in Immokalee and the surrounding areas. No longer did those seeking training to better their employment potential have to travel to Naples or Ft. Myers for quality post-secondary education targeted to high wage, high demand positions. A grand opportunity was now right in their own back yard.

Annually, iTECH serves about 750 students. Three hundred seventy five of those students which includes 170 high school students dually enrolled at iTECH seize that opportunity to enhance their lives and increase exponentially their earning power by enrolling in and graduating from one of iTECH’s seventeen career and technical education programs. Some students even complete more than one program to add luster to their marketability. The remainder of the students study GED, basic skills, and English in preparation for future CTE enrollment.

The 2019 iTECH graduating class will enter the workforce well prepared to meet the rigor and conquer the challenges just as their predecessors have done. This year’s graduates, however, had a special moment added to their ceremony. They saw their graduation program with all their names placed in a time capsule along with other objects that represent each of the nineteen career and technical education and literacy programs offered at the college. The time capsule will be enclosed in a case and displayed in the college’s conference center hallway. It will be opened in the spring of 2029 when the college celebrates its twentieth anniversary.
