FDC reaffirms commitment to public safety during Halloween

Posted

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — As families across Florida prepare to celebrate Halloween, the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC), in partnership with state and local law enforcement agencies, is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of Florida's communities. Each year, FDC Probation Officers conduct statewide residential inspections of sex offenders under felony supervision to verify compliance with court-ordered conditions and restrictions on Halloween-related activities.

"Protecting Florida's communities remains our highest priority," said Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Richard Comerford. “Through proactive enforcement and strong partnerships with state and local law enforcement, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure a safe Halloween for Floridians. I commend our probation officers and law enforcement partners for their continued dedication to keeping our communities safe.”

This annual public safety initiative includes more than 5,000 residential inspections statewide, reinforcing accountability and compliance among sex offenders under supervision. These inspections focus on enforcing court-ordered restrictions, including prohibitions on Halloween decorations, interactions with trick-or-treaters, and participation in holiday activities.

“Our probation officers play a critical role in ensuring offenders comply with the conditions of their supervision,” said Assistant Deputy Secretary of Community Corrections Joe Winkler. “Through thousands of residential inspections conducted in coordination with our law enforcement partners, we are reinforcing accountability and taking proactive measures to prevent violations during Halloween.”

Sex offenders are expected to strictly abide by holiday-specific restrictions which include:

  • Not giving out candy or other treats.
  • Turning off porch lights; closing blinds.
  • No outside decorations.
  • Not answering the door to trick-or-treaters.
  • Not dressing in costumes or masks.
  • Not attending Halloween parties.

Offenders found in violation of their supervision conditions may be subject to immediate arrest and violation of probation proceedings.

FDC remains committed to working alongside its law enforcement partners to promote public safety and help ensure a safe Halloween for children and families across Florida.
