Cattlemen's rodeo celebrates 75th anniversary this year

Posted

The Okeechobee Cattlemen’s Association rodeo celebrates the local rodeo’s 75th anniversary this year. Okeechobee cowboys were already competing in rodeos before the establishment of the local event.

A headline  in the Feb. 27, 1951 Florida Times Union declared “Pete Clemons Sets Pace in Spurs Roping.”

The story explains: “Pete Clemons of Brighton led the calf roping contest with a time of 20.4 seconds as the first Silver Spurs Midwinter Rodeo passed the halfway point this afternoon.”

Clemons put himself through university with money he won competing in rodeos.

This photo from 1947 from the Florida State Archives has a note: "They don't teach this is college, but many of the students at the University of Florida, Gainesville, come from the ranch country and each year they stage their own collegiate rodeo. This winner is "Pete" Clemons, a Florida champion rodeo calf roper, who has just ridden down this "dogie", roped and tied him up neatly in 16,8 seconds."
