DAYTONA — On Saturday, Nov. 1, several Okeechobee High School cheerleaders had the incredible opportunity to cheer in Daytona alongside the Bethune-Cookman University Cheerleaders. This experience gave these athletes a glimpse into the collegiate cheer atmosphere — and it was nothing short of amazing!
Coach Heidi Dove is passionate about providing more opportunities and exposure for OHS cheerleaders. Earlier this summer, some of the girls trained with University of South Florida cheerleaders, where they learned new collegiate grips and techniques. In December, the OHS competitive cheer team has been invited to perform at the Citrus Bowl, another exciting milestone for the growing program.
The OHS competitive team is now entering its second year, and in its inaugural season, they proudly qualified for the FHSAA State Cheer Championships — an impressive accomplishment for a new team with limited competitive experience. This season, the team will compete in several events across Gainesville, Orlando, and other surrounding areas.
“I’m so excited to continue building a strong foundation for OHS Cheer,” said Coach Dove. “We have many athletes who dream of cheering at the collegiate level, and I want to give them every opportunity to make that happen.”
The program continues to grow, and with that growth comes expenses. The competitive team is currently participating in a Snap! Raise fundraiser, and any donation amount is greatly appreciated.
“We’re so thankful to our school and community for supporting these opportunities,” Coach Dove added. “This is just the beginning for OHS Cheer!”
