OKEECHOBEE – October was National Disability Employment Month in Okeechobee County.
At their Oct. 23 meeting, Okeechobee County Commissioners presented the proclamation to representatives from Helping People Succeed.
“With your support, we are empowering individuals with disabilities through job readiness, placement, and on-the-job coaching,” said Shannon Wilson, director of Successful Futures at Helping People Succeed.
“Inclusive employment benefits everyone,” she added.
The proclamation states: “Recognition of the contributions of people with disabilities is an effective way to overcome negative stereotypes and eliminate physical and attitudinal barriers to full participation in all aspects of community life, including education, recreation and employment.
“People with disabilities are an important, vital part of our community as valued workers, civic leaders, business owners, veterans, family members, and friends, and they are innovative and valued contributors in the workplace, the classroom, and the community.
“Okeechobee County is committed to ensuring that programs and employment practices effectively serve and benefit people of all abilities to support individual dignity, self-reliance and productive lives for all people.
“Okeechobee is proud to renew its dedication to fostering equal access and demonstrating commitment to full inclusion of people with disabilities.”
