“Turn up the Heat” is the name of this year’s project of the Ladies of the Women’s Missionary League of Christ the King Lutheran Church in LaBelle. Each year these ladies look for something they can do as a project that will help out locally. Last year they did disaster relief for kids, and this year it is lap robes for residents at Oakbrook Nursing Home.

These ladies made 95 lap robes out of fleece material. Two pockets were sewn on to use for anything that needs to be kept handy. Above the pockets is a hand warmer/muff to put the hands in to help keep them warm. These lap robes are even cut so as not to get in the wheels of the wheelchairs. Crocheted edges puts the final touches to the lap robe.

These ladies met at the church once a week for two or three hours for about six weeks to work on this project. Some ladies even did some sewing and crocheting at home - everyone was working hard to finish this project before the snowbirds have to take flight.

In every project, there are some people that are not as talented as others, and this project was no different. But a willing worker is never turned away. The ladies that can’t sew or crochet were put to work doing purchasing, cutting, and numerous other tasks that had to be done to complete this project.

Christ the King Lutheran Church is a small church with a big heart, and each lap robe has been put together with love.

In the Bible in Luke 6:31, it gives God’s Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” These ladies did just that. All their work is not done for themselves but for the glory of God.
