The Weekly Clothes Line: And the Word was made flesh

Posted

Another Christmas has been celebrated. The family gathering is over. In another week, we’ll be taking down the decorations and storing them in the attic until next year. As I think about the beautiful story of Christmas with all its colorful imagery, I’m drawn to the apostle John and how he tells the story of the coming Messiah. John’s interpretation might be considered even more powerful than the actual story itself.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God….” For John, God is action, from the first word of his Gospel. In Verses one through fourteen of Chapter One, John spells out God’s entire purpose for the coming of Jesus, how He is all in all, how He is the ultimate light of the world, but He was not accepted. Yet, in the end, those who did accept Him would be saved. And John’s ultimate testimony: “And the Word became flesh and lived among us…”. Jesus as the Word of God…Jesus who became flesh to win us back to the perfection of heaven…all of it captured in these fourteen verses of Holy Scripture. The power and glory of the Creator of the universe, leaving behind his Godhead, coming to earth as a man, spreading the Good News, dying for our sins, rising to life again, and leaving us His Spirit to guide us on our way through life. John gives us The Trinity, one God, eternal life…all for us. How blessed we are to call ourselves His children!
