Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible

Pope St. Damasus had an idea of one book containing all the books of sacred scripture. He called this new book “Sacra Biblia.” In English “The Holy Library,” today we call it the “Holy Bible.” The Church Council of Rome 382 AD, Council of Hippo 393 AD, and the Council of Carthage II 397 AD recommend the books to St. Damasus. St. Damasus chose 73 books for the final compiling of the Bible and assigned St. Jerome to translate and compile the book.

Come to the Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church adult Bible study “Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible” this winter. The 2016 Spring Arts Festival will be held Thursday, March 17, at LaBelle High School 5-8:30 p.m. It will feature a Taste of LaBelle (local restaurants serving their finest foods), exhibiting art and bands from all the schools plus the color guard. Sign up for Little Miss LaBelle

Sign up for Little Miss LaBelle, Thursday, March 10, and Tuesday, March 15, from 5-6:30 p.m. at LaBelle High School Auditorium. Registration fee is $25. Grades Kindergarten through 8th grade are eligible to participate as long as the contestant attends a LaBelle school or lives in the City of LaBelle.

Help support Zac’s Friendship House

Zac’s Triple Play 5k will take place on March 19 at 7:30 a.m., beginning and ending at Zac’s Friendship House. Two Peas supports Relay for life

Two Peas Cafe Relay for Life team supports Relay for Life. $500 in Universal Studio gift certificates are available at the cafe. The drawing will be at the Relay for Life in Barron Park April 2 at 8 p.m. Donation $5 each or five for $20.

Water, soil conservation meeting

The Hendry Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its regularly scheduled Board meeting on March 24, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the large conference room of the Dallas B. Townsend Agricultural Building. Meetings are open to the public.

Back to the ‘60s

Come hear the Firehouse Singers rock out in “Age of Aquarius,” (songs from the ‘60s). This musical review will be performed April 1-2, 7-9, at 7 p.m. and April 3 and 10 at 2 p.m. at the Firehouse Community Theater which is located at 241 N. Bridge Street in LaBelle. Hot rides and hot dogs

On March 15 the South Central Florida Car Club will host its monthly Hot Rides & Hot Dogs in the Park Cruise In. This event is held at Barron Park, St Rd 29N from 5-8 p.m. If you like things with wheels you are most welcome to come out and spend the evening with like minded folks. Grilled hot dogs and lots of sides are served with drinks too. New, used, old, or even for sale, fire it up and stroll on over to the park. Gathering of Christian Men fundraiser

The Gathering of Christian Men will have a scholarship fund raiser, offering 100 gallons of free gas. All proceeds will go to their scholarship program for LaBelle High School students. Operation Backpack BBQ

Saturday, March 19, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Carlson Memorial Methodist Church, 310 Campbell Street. Pulled pork, baked beans, cole slaw and bread. Dinners will be ready for drive thru pickup on the south side of the church at 11:00 a .m.

STA 5/6 (Stormwater Treatment Area 5)

Walk or bicycle on over 20 miles of levee roads at SFWMD’s STA 5/6 (Stormwater Treatment Area 5/6) during daylight hours four days each week on Friday, Saturday, Sunday (except for fall/winter hunting), and Monday. This popular site known for bird watching, wildlife viewing, photography, hiking, or bicycling is located 28 miles south of Clewiston. Park at the STA 5/6 public access area which is 2 ½ miles east of the CR 835 and Deer Fence Canal Road intersection. Watch for the directional signs on CR 835. Amenities at STA 5/6 include 2 shelters and dry vault toilets.

Blood drive

American Legion Post 130 will have a blood drive Thursday, March 10, from noon till 6 p.m. All donors will receive a free t-shirt and a wellness checkup including blood pressure, temperature, iron count, pulse and cholesterol screening. ID required. Give one pint of hope - donate blood.

Adult FCAT retake

The Adult FCAT retake will be given on March 29th and 30th in the LaBelle High School Library. Any student who has already graduated but still needs to take this test is welcome to sign up. The test will begin at 5:30 p.m. each night and attendance for both nights is necessary to complete the test. Please call Mrs. Marotti or Dr. Borghese at LHS (863-674-4120) to sign up for the test.

MCA to meet

The Muse Community Association will have their scheduled meeting March 14, 2016 at the Muse Community Building in Muse off of Loblobby Rd. Our meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. with pot luck dinner. Our Guest Speaker will be Angie Colegrove and Marisa Shivers from Glades County Emergency Management. Come out and attend this informative meeting and meet your neighbors in Western Glades County. Masonic Lodge yard sale, fundraiser

Saturday, March 19, from 7-11 a.m. the Masonic Lodge will host its annual yard sale. From lawn mowers to old clothes, they have a lot to offer. LaBelle Masonic Lodge is at 180 Jaycee/Lions Dr. right beside LaBelle Elementary and the soccer fields.

Doggy fashion, doggy fun

Animal Rescue presents a doggy fashion show at Barron Park Saturday, March 19, 2 p.m. Walkers and pets will be judged for best costume.

There will be chicken dinners for sale for $6, a 50/50 raffle and a demonstration by sensei Earl Stockwell’s Hanokami Kai kids. Registration starts at 1:30 p.m. All proceeds go to your local no kill shelter Animal Rescue, Inc.

Widows to meet

The Widows Support Group will meet March 17 at 11:30 a.m. at Cactus Mex on Cowboy. All widows welcome.

Craft fair, flea market

Grandma’s Grove will hold its monthly craft fair and flea market on Thursday, March 10, from 8:30 a.m.- 12:00. A portion of the proceeds from the fair will be donated to the Caloosa Humane Society. Free HIV test

March 10 is the eleventh annual National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Although fewer USA women than men are infected with HIV, women are actually more biologically susceptible to infection if exposed. Among adult Florida women living with HIV disease through 2014, 72 percent were aged 40 or older. The Florida Department of Health in Hendry and Glades counties will offer free HIV testing for anyone on Thursday, March 10, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at our clinic locations: 1100 Olympia Street (Clewiston); 1140 Pratt Blvd (LaBelle); and 1021 Health Park Dr (Moore Haven). Take charge of your life. Take the test.

OCA Spaghetti Dinner

The Ortona Community Association will hold the last spaghetti buffet dinner of the winter season on Saturday, March 12, from 5- 7 p.m. at the Community Park Building, 2086 Ortona Locks Road (Highway 78A). The all-you-can-eat spaghetti buffet features delicious pasta with original recipe meat sauce, tossed salad, hot garlic bread, green beans, dessert, coffee, and iced tea for $8.00 at the door. Funds raised at this charitable event support programs for Ortona children.
