There’s been a rise in recent sightings of colored, round, and decorative objects around LaBelle and they aren’t Easter Eggs. In fact, they are rocks, “Kindness Rocks”, that have been painted with brightly colored designs and inspirational messages. The idea was brought to the area by eleven year old Upthegrove Elementary student Jarrod Willis, who saw something similar during a summer visit to his Grandmother’s house in Missouri. The idea is to design your painted rocks, hide them around town, and when someone finds it they have 48 hours to either re-hide that rock or to paint their own and hide it to keep the scavenger hunt alive. So many people have been catching on to this kind hearted version of geocaching that Jarrod’s mother has organized a Meet and Greet at the Barron Park in LaBelle on April 15, as advertised on their Facebook Group Page “LaBelle Rocks”. Families are invited to come to the park with rocks in tow, paint some rocks, trade with others, and after they are hidden throughout the town, try to find their own rocks. It’s also a great way for the children to make friends while doing something promoting kindness. When I asked what Jarrod would say to invite people to the Barron Park for their meet and greet he said “I think it would be really cool if a lot of people would come and paint rocks.” Who could decline an invitation like that?
