Goodwill’s new Community Resource Center has a one-stop office for Veterans called the Military Resource Encounter or the MRE, that offers multiple services to veterans and their families. This is a branch of their Community Support Services that is working in connection with several different agencies in order to attempt to help veterans access all available resources and benefits in a timely manner. The American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans Center, Homeless Coalition, Hearts and Homes, and many other agencies have set up a wrap-around system that works to solve the disconnect in information, reduce frustration that can often occur when veterans seek help, and truly aims to help meet any and all veterans’ needs.

The MRE Program hopes to address strategic issues and provided community-supported solutions for veterans and their families, recognizing how hard it is for veterans as they transition into civilian life. Goodwill recognizes that millions of dollars are spent to train armed forces personnel, and that they are lost assets if they do not find a way to repurpose those skills. One of MRE’s goals is to help veterans obtain high quality employment that matches their experience and training, instead of jobs that make them feel unappreciated, a problem that is often encountered by veterans. Beyond employment, veterans can expect to receive help for obtaining food, furniture, disability claims, financial assistance, and more. The only requirement for this program is a DD 214, as Goodwill has taken the stance that all veterans, regardless of their conditions of discharge, are welcome to utilize these services. The organizers hope to also throw barbeques and other gatherings and celebrations for veterans and their families to enjoy.
