FDOT accepts community feedback on US 27 project

Posted

CLEWISTON — After a public meeting regarding the upcoming changes to US 27 in Clewiston, the Florida Department of Transportation says they will make adjustments to the project based on community feedback.

The project involves roadway improvements to US 27 from Industrial Canal to West Sagamore Avenue in Clewiston. The original proposed improvements include milling and resurfacing the pavement, introduction of curbed medians and traffic separators, and expansion of the drainage system to alleviate corridor ponding, along with upgrades to signing and pavement markings

One of the most controversial aspects of the project were the planned medians in the center of the road. And after receiving public comments from the Clewiston community, FDOT says those medians are no longer part of the proposed plan.

“I’m happy to share that FDOT District Secretary Jamie Driggers and I met earlier today,” said Hendry County Commissioner Ramon Iglesias, “and FDOT has agreed to remove all proposed medians and curbs from the project. The scope will now focus on resurfacing the roadway and addressing drainage issues only.”

Commissioner Iglesias went on to thank the Clewiston community members who made their voices heard, and tanked staff at FDOT for listening to the concerns.

In a press release, FDOT said they remain committed to balancing the objectives of the original Visioning Study for the project with the current needs of the community. FDOT says that critical drainage improvements and roadway resurfacing will continue as planned to ensure the corridor remains safe, functional, and reliable.
