Lieutenant Shawn Reed, City Attorney Derek Rooney, Superintendent of Public Works Michael Boyle, and Finance Director Ron Zimmerly presented reports at the Commission Meeting on April 12. Alexis Crespo introduced herself to the Commission as LaBelle’s new City Planner.

Lieutenant Shawn Reed from the Hendry County Sherriff’s Office reported persons crimes increased from last March. There were two robberies, two assaults, and six batteries. He said property crimes were down. There were seven thefts, five burglaries, and one criminal mischiefs in March. The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office received 3,852 calls for service, 230 traffic stops, 106 arrests, 1,141 residential checks, 709 business checks and 493 security checks.

City Attorney Derek Rooney notified the commission that in May the medical marijuana ban will be due for its first reading.

Superintendent of Public Works Michael Boyle reported issues transferring water at the new water plant and they are “modifying the process” of how transferring water works. “We can make water,” said Boyle, “We just can’t transfer it.” He said they are looking into changing the pumps.

Alexis Crespo, Vice President of Planning at Waldrop Engineering in Bonita Springs introduced herself as the LaBelle’s new City Planner. She started her career in 2005 at Brackman and Associates working under former City Planner Shellie Johnson and worked with her at Ensite. “I am familiar with the city of LaBelle and have good access to your institutional knowledge with your former city planner,” Crespo said, I am really excited to provide cost effective solutions the city needs moving forward.” Crespo requested to a resubmit of a PAR grant application. Her request passed 4-0.

Finance Director Ron Zimmerly said the Mayor was served with a legal service for unpaid taxes on a property given to the city on Ford and Sunset. The property will go to a tax sale.

The fire station renovation is “moving along nicely”. Because of a change order they need to request around $31,000 extra. Zimmerly recommend the change order to be passed. The execution of the order passed 4-0. He said the old water treatment plant at 250 South Main Street requires repairs relating to Hurricane Irma damage.

“We have an insurance claim but are hoping to get help from FEMA,” said Zimmerly.

The Commission passed the low bid of $24,450 from Beck Construction 4-0.

Zimmerly said the Animal Control building also needs repairs due to damage from Irma. “We also submitted an insurance claim for Animal Control and are hoping to get help from FEMA,” said Zimmerly. The lowest bid for the repairs was from HL Bennet at $17,750. The Commission passed the low bid from HL Bennet 4-0.
