OHS softball team sweeps Glades Day and Moore Haven

Three lake area softball teams battled last week and one clear winner was able to emerge from the fray.

Okeechobee beat Glades Day 11-1 in their game on April 16, dropping the Lady Gators to 5-7 on the year.

Glades Day head coach Sherri Paez says she was hoping the Lady Gators would play stronger against the Lady Brahmans, but that they are still the number one seed in their district. Despite the loss to Okeechobee Paez says she’s ready to see what the Lady Gators can do in the 2A district 7 tournament.

After traveling to Okeechobee Glades Day will now move on host Clewiston on April 24 on what will be the Lady Gators senior night. The Lady Gators swept Clewiston in two games last year and Paez says she expects her team to play well again.

Two days after the Glades Day game, Okeechobee made the short trip down to Moore Haven to face a Lady Terrier team that had been able to put together a 10-6 season up to that point, already improving from their 8-8 season a year ago.

But the young Okeechobee team proved to be a little too much for the Lady Terriers.

The Lady Brahmans left Moore Haven with a win after defeating the Lady Terriers 12-4 on April 18.

Previous Athlete of the Week winner Haley Underhill opened the game on the mound for Okeechobee and pitched well, but it was the Lady Brahman offense that stole the show.

Okeechobee head coach Mary Huff described her team as underdogs after losing veteran players like Jillian Crosby, Megan Hargraves, Lauren Bostwick and Kassie Weldon following the 2017-18 school year. New veterans like Underhill, Alexandrea Fulford, Brooke Santiago, Janel Aponte, Halle McDuffie and Lillian Henry have stepped up to help lead the underclassmen on the team.

The wins against Glades Day and Moore Haven cap off a four-game winning streak for the Lady Brahmans. That winning streak was finally broken when Okeechobee fell to Wellington 3-2 in extra innings on April 22.

Okeechobee will now host Harmony on April 25 on the Lady Brahman’s senior night.

Moore Haven will host their senior night on April 25 when they play at home against Lake Placid. The Lady Terriers beat Lake Placid earlier this year 17-12 after pulling off a wild comeback in the final two innings.
