Everglades Boogie skydive event gets OK

CLEWISTON — Skydive Spaceland Clewiston has been granted approval to use parts of Airglades Airport for the staging of its five-day Everglades Boogie skydiving festival during the third week of the new year, ending on Martin Luther King Day.

Hendry County Public Works Director R. Shane Parker requested county commissioners’ OK on Nov. 13 of a waiver for the event, set for Jan. 17-21, because it will take place within 30 days of the Hendry County Fair (scheduled Feb. 12-17 for 2019). His report said the county has approved several such events for Skydive Spaceland in the past, never receiving any negative comments.

Staff say that the company, which leases space from the county, promotes Hendry County as a destination and provides the region an economic boost with this event, with numerous bookings at local hotels and restaurants connected with the Everglades Boogie. They have coordinated with Airglades International Airport (AIA) Assistant Manager Lillie Rodriguez on planning and noted that AIA had no objections. The diamond area of the airport will be the occupied during the five days.

For the Jan. 17-21 festival, Hendry County and lessee Skydive Air Adventures Inc. agree:

• Overnight camping will be allowed for the nights of Thursday through Sunday that weekend;

• A paid security guard will be stationed at the airport from noon Jan. 17, 2019, through 5 p.m. Jan. 20;

• Additional waste receptacles will be placed at AIA by the county’s waste hauler;

• The lessee will have the property cleared of any trash or debris by 5 p.m. Jan. 21, with all receptacles to be removed by 5 p.m. Jan. 22;

• Four portable toilets will be provided for festivalgoers;

• The company will clean and stock toiletries for the terminal building during the event;

• Alcohol sales will be prohibited, as are electrical connections, cooking, open fires, water hose usage, laundry or clothes washing, or bathing by campers on county premises;

• Parking will be allowed only on paved lots or in the diamond area, not along roads or shoulders;

• No spectators will be allowed along Airglades Boulevard or within the fenced-in area of the airport, and no pets or animals on airport property; and

• A special event permit will be obtained, as well as proof of $1 million in liability insurance.
