MOORE HAVEN- The Moore Haven Terriers varsity basketball team secure a sweep of their Lake Okeechobee rivals early this season.
The Terriers defeated the Pahokee Blue Devils 35-34 on Dec. 2, the Glades Central Raiders 67-55 on Dec. 5, the Okeechobee Brahmans 75-46 on Dec. 11, and the Glades Day Gators 77-43 on Dec. 15.
Moore Haven has a 9-2 record and looks like they’re ready to go on another district title run this season.
The Terriers finished last season with 13-8 record, but in those early games against other Lake Okeechobee schools, they came up short in two of them. Last year the Terriers lost to Glades Central and Okeechobee before the Christmas break, while beating Pahokee and Glades Day.
Later that season, the Terriers went on to win the district championship defeating Marathon in the semifinal and Fort Meade in the district final.
Marathon and Moore Haven faced off for a rematch on Dec. 12, with the Terriers taking a dramatic double overtime 68-62 win. Marathon led the Terriers with only 10 seconds remaining in regulation, but Moore Haven tied things back up and took control in double overtime to secure the victory.
Junior Tykeem Paseler had 21 points in the overtime victory, followed by senior Shakur Williams with 19 and senior Aaryn Askew with 11. Senior Clarence Hunter led the team in rebounds with eight.
Following Christmas break, the Terriers will be back in action with a rematch from the district championship. Fort Meade is set to come to Moore Haven on Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. After that the Terriers will host the Okeechobee Brahmans on Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.
