Moore Haven Terriers slay Lake Placid Dragons

Posted

LAKE PLACID — The Moore Haven Terrier varsity basketball team opened their 2020 season with a win over the Lake Placid Dragons on Nov. 24.

The Terriers defeated the Dragons 64-53 on the road in Lake Placid. Moore Haven swept Lake Placid last year, beating the Dragons 59-49 and 67-49.

Despite the recent success the Terriers have had against Lake Placid, it was the Dragons who opened the game by taking a lead.

Lake Placid jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the first quarter after a few Moore Haven missed shots and turnovers. By the end of the first quarter the Terriers were able to right the ship and bring the Dragon lead down to one at 10-9.

In contrast to that shaky first-quarter performance, however, the second quarter was all Moore Haven.

The Terriers quickly took the lead after forcing a turnover and scoring on the ensuing fast break. Then they went on an absolute tear, outscoring the Dragons 22-8 in the second quarter and taking a 30-18 lead into halftime.

The Terriers were on fire at the three-point line in the second quarter. Any time the Dragons managed to make a big play, the Terriers would have an answer.

To their credit, the Dragons responded to the adversity well. Lake Placid hit five three-pointers in the third quarter in an attempt to chip away at the Moore Haven lead. But with the cushion they had built in the second quarter, all the Terriers had to do was to keep pace with the Dragons to put the game away, which is exactly what they did.

The Terriers will finally play their first home game of the season on Dec. 4 when they host the Neumann Celtic at 7 p.m. That match kicks off a three game home stand for the Terriers, who will then host Palmetto Ridge on Dec. 8 and Seacrest County Day on Dec. 12.
